Naval Research Laboratory

The Naval Research Laboratory conducts cutting-edge research and technology development to make the United States Navy and Marine Corps the most advanced in the world. NRL’s scientists and engineers conduct basic and applied research across a wide spectrum of scientific disciplines for both immediate and long-range national defense needs. This research is sponsored by the Office of Naval Research, NRL’s parent command, and numerous other Department of Defense, government, and nongovernment agencies, including Naval Systems Commands and Warfare Centers, Air Force, Army, DARPA, Department of Energy, and NASA.

NRL experts collaborate with other professionals in government, academia, and industry to accomplish their research, and report their results to the scientific community in hundreds of journal articles, presentations, and reports every year. Most important, NRL-developed technologies are transitioned into vital military and civilian applications.

Since NRL opened its doors in 1923, its scientific program has been characterized by achievement and flexibility. From its early (and continuing) innovations in radar, acoustics, satellite technology, solar physics, and GPS, to its recent accomplishments in nanoscience, plasma physics, biosensing, and electro-optics, NRL anticipates and meets the ever-changing technical needs of the Navy.
