University of Vermont

Mission
To prepare students to lead productive, responsible, creative lives and to create, interpret and share knowledge, applying it for the benefit of Vermont and society as a whole.

The University of Vermont was chartered in 1871, the same year that Vermont became the 14th state in the union. UVM was the first college or university in the country to have it plainly declared in its charter that the "rules, regulations, and by-laws shall not tend to give preference to any religious sect or denomination whatsoever" - a clear assertion of Vermont’s commitment to equality and enlightenment. In defiance of contemporary customs and norms, UVM admitted two women as students in 1871 and four years later was the first institution in the country to admit women to full membership in the scholarly society, Phi Beta Kappa.

The College of Engineering and Mathematics is one of eight undergraduate schools and colleges within the University of Vermont. The relatively small size of our college allows student/faculty relationships to flourish. Engineering and mathematics class sizes typically range from 15-30 students so our faculty members get to know our students and our students get to know our faculty. Our College offers degrees in Civil, Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Mathematics with options for specializing in the growing areas of environmental, biomedical and material science engineering and biostatistics. These programs are enhanced by excellent laboratories and other research facilities which are open to students through coursework and research projects, working independently and with faculty members. The college student population is made up of over 500 undergraduate students, 19% are women and 7% are minority students.

The college has developed the Women And Minorities In Math & Engineering Program (WAMMIE)to address the specific issues of our underrepresented populations. WAMMIE's mission is to foster a commitment to educational, personal and scientific excellence in our underrepresented student population, by leveraging a strong support system based in our undergraduate and graduate programs, our faculty, staff, and administrators, as well as in our alumni, corporate partners, and community leaders. WAMMIE partners with other University support systems to provide a wide array of services to students.
