Howard University
Howard University is a comprehensive, research-oriented, historically Black private university providing an educational experience of exceptional quality to students of high academic potential with particular emphasis upon the provision of educational opportunities to promising Black students. Further, the University is dedicated to attracting and sustaining a cadre of faculty who are, through their teaching and research, committed to the development of distinguished and compassionate graduates and to the quest for solutions to human and social problems in the United States and throughout the world.
The Howard University Science, Engineering, and Mathematics Program (HUSEM) is a multidisciplinary program involving nine departments in the College of Engineering , Architecture, and Computer Sciences and the College of Arts and Sciences. The goal of the HUSEM program is to promote academic achievement as well as increase the numbers of underrepresented minorities who receive baccalaureate and graduate degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. The HUSEM Program has an established track record in the implementation of several initiatives that improve the quality of undergraduate STEM education at Howard University:
* Financial support through stipends, book grants, travel grants and scholarships
* Funded Undergraduate Research Experiences (URE)
* Weekly and group tutoring sessions
* Personal, professional and academic mentoring
* Distinguished Scholars Fellowship program
* Early intervention for students who are prone to drop out of STEM classes
