Dartmouth College
Northernmost member of the Ivy League, Dartmouth College is a private, four-year, coeducational undergraduate college with graduate schools of business, engineering and medicine and 17 graduate programs in the arts and sciences. Its 200-acre main campus is located in scenic Hanover, N.H. on the banks of the Connecticut River, about a two hour drive northwest from Boston.
Academic Calendar: The Dartmouth Plan - a year-round calendar consisting of four ten-week academic terms (quarters), which correspond roughly to the seasons - allows flexibility in scheduling. Students must be on campus freshman year, summer before junior year and senior year. The Thayer School of Engineering comprises both the Undergraduate Department of Engineering Sciences of Dartmouth College, and a graduate professional school in engineering. Undergraduate programs emphasize interdisciplinary study in the engineering sciences within the context of a broad-based liberal arts education. At the graduate level, Thayer School offers degrees through the doctorate combining scholarship, research, experimentation, problem-solving, and design.
An Internet site since 1988, Dartmouth's high-speed computer network links all dormitory rooms, administrative and academic buildings, and mainframe computers on- and off-campus. All Dartmouth undergraduates own a personal computer; more than 12,000 personal computers and workstations are in use campuswide.
Student Body Undergraduate enrollment- 4,055, representing every state and nearly 58 foreign countries. Students of color comprise nearly 25% of the incoming class. 49% of the admitted class is female; 51% is male. Graduate enrollment-1030.
Academic Departments/Programs: 37 in four divisions: humanities, sciences, social sciences and interdisciplinary academic programs. Science departments at Dartmouth include biology, chemistry, computer science, earth sciences, engineering sciences, mathematics, and physics. The engineering sciences department offers an interdisciplinary major; there are no separate departments or majors by engineering fields. Dartmouth students declare majors at the end of their sophomore year.
Dartmouth College established the Women in Science Project (WISP) in 1990 to address the underrepresentation of women in science, mathematics and engineering. The mission of WISP is to retain more Dartmouth women in science, math, and engineering by creating and fostering a supportive academic and social climate that will aid women in pursuing science as a major and a career. WISP's broad goal is achieved by enhancing the experiences of women, particularly in their first year, through a comprehensive set of proven intervention strategies, including mentoring, role modeling, early hands-on research experiences, information, and building of community.
