Foothill College
Founded in 1957 with the hallmark "educational opportunity for all", Foothill College is recognized internationally as one of the nation's most outstanding community colleges. Located in the foothills of the Santa Cruz mountains, in the midst of Silicon Valley, Foothill college is a learning organization best described as a large community classroom. We encourage dialogue and conversation as a primary teaching and learning tool--in classrooms, meeting rooms and board rooms. To be an effective learning organization, we must be responsive to change.
We value effective leadership and teaching. Our faculty, student and adminstrator leaders reflect Foothill's "learning organization" ideology through their decisions and interaction with others.
Total student enrollment at Foothill College is 17, 623 as of Fall, 2000. Fall, 2001 showed an increase of 6%. Forty-nine percent of the population is female and 60% are between the ages of 20-49. The college offers degrees in engineering, mathematics, physics, chemistry, computer science, biology as well as certificates in related career fields. While there is no separate division or department for women in the science and engineering programs, 39% of the faculty in the Math and Physical Sciences division are female and 100% of the biology faculty are female, which demonstrates Foothill's commitment to women in these fields.
