Susan Skemp

On June 1, 2006, Susan H. Skemp joined the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), as Executive Vice President of the newly formed Civil Engineering Forum for Innovation (CEFI). Ms. Skemp brings a broad industrial background, federal policy, and engineering association experience to ASCE.
Prior to joining ASCE, Sue served from October 1, 2004 as a Fellow, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, in the Office of Science and Technology Policy, Executive Office of the President, reporting to the Deputy to the Associate Director for Technology. She acted as the policy lead for industrial technology matters as they pertain to the President's Manufacturing Initiative and the Manufacturing Innovation Executive Order, and U.S. Competitiveness, and brought a focus on matters related to K-12 science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and engineering education.
In September 2004, Sue retired from Pratt & Whitney, after 31 years of service. Prior to her retirement, Ms. Skemp held the position of Manager, Advanced Technology Planning. She was responsible for strategic planning of the technology portfolio associated with the company's aircraft engines, power systems, and space propulsion. Ms. Skemp spent her entire professional career at Pratt & Whitney, rejoining the aerospace manufacturer in 1981, upon receiving her BSc degree in mechanical engineering from Florida Atlantic University
Susan H. Skemp, a Fellow of ASME, served as its 121st president of ASME (2002-2003). Sue is a member of the Public Policy Committee on Aeronautics of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and an Associate Fellow.
Dedicated to the advancement of STEM and engineering education, Ms. Skemp serves as a national judge of For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST). She currently chairs the Advisory Committee for the Extraordinary Women in Engineering Project, a coalition of over 60 educational and engineering organizations, aimed at inspiring young women to enter engineering. She is a member of Engineering Advisory Boards to the United States Military Academy, the University of Maryland College Park, and Florida Atlantic University, and a member of the FAU National Alumni Association Board of Directors.
A native Floridian, Ms. Skemp earned her Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering from Florida Atlantic University in 1981. She is the mother of two children, and the proud grandmother of two.
