The University Park Campus, located in the middle of the Commonwealth, offers undergraduate, masters and doctoral degrees. The adjoining borough of State College has often been described as one of America’s quintessential college towns. The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in Hershey and the College of Medicine has graduated 2,808 physicians and 598 scientists with Ph.D. or M.S. degrees as of May 2001. Each year, more than 360 resident physicians are trained in medical specialties at Penn State Hershey Medical Center. In 2005 THON, the largest student-run philanthropy in the world, has raised over 4 Million dollars in the search for a cure for pediatric cancer. Since 1977 THON has raised over $30 Million for this cause. The 165 year-old Dickenson School of Law in Carlisle joined ranks with Penn State in 1997. Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport offers skilled and technical training programs. Penn State Great Valley, a graduate studies and continuing education center serves the needs of Philadelphia-area businesses and employees. Nineteen additional campuses offer a variety of associated and baccalaureate degree programs. Among these campuses, Penn State Harrisburg, and Penn State Erie the Behrend College, also feature selected graduate programs geared to the needs of regional businesses, industries, and government agencies. In the Fall of 2006 Penn State had 83,721 full and part time students. Of that total 42,914 or about 51% were enrolled at University Park. Penn State admitted its first female degree candidates in 1871. Today it enrolls about 37,962 women.
Penn States University Park campus was ranked 6th in the top 30 Washington Monthly College rankings “What Colleges can do for the country”. Penn State was included in the Princeton Review “The Best 361 Colleges, 2006.” Graduate programs ranked among the nations top ten include The School of Business, Supply Chain/Logistics, Industrial/Manufacturing Engineering and Materials, Higher Education Administration, Administration/Supervision, Vocational/Technical Education, Counseling and Personnel Services. In 2003 Penn State was awarded 1st in Fulbright Scholarships among 900 other colleges and universities. As of the Fall 2006 the university attracted a record-breaking high of 10,905 minority students, including increases in all categories- Native Americas, Asian/Pacific Islanders, African Americans, and Hispanics. In a typical academic year more than 3,000 international students attend Penn State representing about 100 countries.
