Carnegie Mellon University

Carnegie Mellon University, located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania (with branch campuses in Moffett Field, CA and Doha, Qatar), was founded in 1900 by industrialist Andrew Carnegie. Originally known as the Carnegie Technical Schools, Carnegie Mellon began as a vocational training school for the sons and daughters of working class Pittsburghers. Today the university has emerged as one of the nation's top private research institutions. Its internationally recognized programs encompass engineering, computer science, technology, science, liberal arts, fine arts and public and private management.

Carnegie Mellon University has approximately 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students and 4,500 faculty, research and administrative staff. An internationally known leader in science and technical fields, Carnegie Mellon provides special support for women in the sciences and technical fields through the colleges and the university.

Carnegie Institute of Technology, the engineering college, has an active award-winning chapter of Society of Women Engineers (SWE); women comprise 26% of its undergraduates and 24% of its graduate students. In Mellon College of Science, an active chapter of the Association of Women in Science (AWIS) exists; 43% of the undergraduates and 31% of the graduate students are women. The School of Computer Science has an innovative research program on women in computing and 23% of its undergraduates and 20% of its graduate students are women.

University Support for women comes through the office of the Assistant Vice Provost for Graduate Education, the Graduate Programs Office, and the Undergraduate Research Office, as well as through the Division of Student Affairs, and individual departmental and program initiatives, including the "Women@SCS" group in the School of Computer Science, WinECE, Women in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Women@INI, Women in Information and Networking Institute, and Women@IT in the School of Computer Science.
