Success Sustained by Study: A summary of nine years of evaluation findings
The design of MentorNet’s programs is based in research and effective practice in mentoring, mentoring programs, the experiences of students, postdoctoral scholars, and facultyparticularly women and people of colorin engineering and science, and the use of electronic communications in building meaningful relationships in an online environment.
Since its inception in 1998, MentorNet’s One-on-One program has been regularly evaluated both to identify program improvements and to assess outcomes. The reports of evaluations, frequently conducted by external evaluators, have been made available on the MentorNet web site to all interested parties. This report, made possible through a grant from the S. D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation, is intended to provide a summary of findings across the first nine years of MentorNet’s program operations. We anticipate that many MentorNet stakeholders and prospective stakeholders will find this overview useful in understanding the growth of MentorNet’s operation and the results of its work.
The MentorNet Community
The MentorNet Community offers several opportunities for participation. These include:
- One-on-One E-Mentoring Program MentorNet’s award-winning e-mentoring program pairs protégés and mentors for structured, email-based mentoring relationships.
- E-Forum A series of online topic-focused discussion groups where Community members can network informally and exchange ideas, information, and advice.
- MentorNet News A monthly online newsletter designed to impart useful information, research findings, and announcements related to mentoring and diversity in engineering and related sciences.
- Resources & Links Readings of interest related to mentoring and diversity in science and engineering; links to related high quality, content-rich web sites.
- Résumé Database Students at MentorNet’s participating campuses, and members of MentorNet sponsoring professional societies, can place their résumés online for MentorNet’s sponsors to view.
Anyone can join the Community by providing his/her name, a valid email address, and a username and password. Currently, there is no charge for individuals to participate in the Community, although members are encouraged to support MentorNet with a tax-deductible donation.
